The Misfits (stylized on the front cover as Jem and The Misfits) is a Jem and The Holograms spinoff comic miniseries announced at SDCC 2016. It takes place during the main series, starting just after Issue #20 and running alongside the rest of the main series. [1][2][3] The comic debuted on December 21, 2016 and ended on June 7, 2017.

Publication History

The Misfits was announced on 23rd July 2016 at the IDW Publishing panel at San Diego Comic Con 2016 that Kelly Thompson was writing a spin-off comic based in the IDW Jem and the Holograms universe. [4]

The comic focused on The Misfits as the main characters, instead of Jem and The Holograms. It featured some exploration into The Misfits' individual backstories [5] and their origin[6].

One of the exciting things that I hope we’re going to get to feature a little bit in the new series, is how exactly The Misfits came together. Origin stories can be tiresome and over-explored in comics, but I think The Misfits are an exception as—apart from Blaze’s introduction to the group—it’s a subject that we’ve never seen tackled, even in the original show. And while The Holograms, as sisters, have a sort of beautiful and simple story of how they came together as a band, it’s safe to say The Misfits coming together is tinged with a lot more drama.

The main interior artist was Jem newcomer Jenn St-Onge. [6] It featured covers and colours by M. Victoria Robado. Issue #1 was released on December 21st, 2016. [6] Previews released by IDW Publishing had featured a logo based on band stickers, with The Misfits' sticker partially obscuring Jem and The Holograms' sticker.

As of June 7th, 2017, the comic consisted of one arc spanning five issues.
